When I came up with the idea for The Playhouse, I knew I wanted to write with a partner to keep me motivated and to bounce ideas off of. I approached Kate thinking she would be ideal for the role of Doris. And I knew she was a good writer to boot. What I didn't know was how much she had written. Kate was already the veteran of a couple of web series. I couldn't have asked for a better writing partner. I didn't know how to go about any of this prior to talking with Kate. She is a one-person production company. Everything from pre to post production. She is a dynamo and a terrific actress to boot.
The smartest move I made was calling Kate and asking her to write with me. Thank you Kate. Thank you! Thank you! I have had the pleasure of writing and performing several sketches with Diana over the last few years. She is the best.
When I came up with the idea for this series she was one of the first people I thought of to cast. I was thrilled when she said she was on board. The role of Constance was written specifically for Diana and for a while I was concerned that I hadn't given her enough to play. So I was re-writing her part right up until the week we first shot. Frankly, I just wanted to give us a couple of moments to play more off one another!
Thank you Diana for coming to The Playhouse and, well, playing with us!
Richard Van Slyke - DirectorThe Playhousehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04861390949106652253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1661527253670929640.post-87631536562707503812011-09-01T16:57:57.779-07:002011-09-01T16:57:57.779-07:00I met Tom two years ago when we made up two-thirds...I met Tom two years ago when we made up two-thirds of the male ensemble in a production of Cole Porter's Red Hot and Blue. We played senators, gangsters and other assorted parts. There's a reason they don't write shows like that anymore. It was madcap!
I asked Tom to fill in for the actor playing Dick at the first reading of The Playhouse. We were so impressed with his take on Dick that when the other actor was unable to commit to the shoot, I was kind of glad he couldn't do it. Tom turned about to be the perfect Dick.
I can't imagine anyone else as Dick. The Playhousehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04861390949106652253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1661527253670929640.post-92150206147500361282011-08-03T21:03:48.279-07:002011-08-03T21:03:48.279-07:00Adam and I met working on Cabaret at Repertory Eas...Adam and I met working on Cabaret at Repertory East earlier this summer. He was Cliff Bradshaw, not an easy role to play and he did a great job with it. One of the more memorable Cliff's I've seen.
I was in pre-production for The Playhouse while performing in Cabaret. One of the actors had a scheduling conflict and I found myself needing someone to play Rock.
As we were talking in the dressing room one night, it occurred to me that Adam was the right age for this role. And although he was a completely different type than the previous actor, something told me he would work.
I told him about the part and gave him a copy of the script to read. He came back the next day and said he was on board.
I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and this is proof positive.
And I'm very grateful to Adam for jumping on board and bringing his perspective to the role. He's added a whole other dimension to the character.
Richard Van Slyke co-writer and directorThe Playhousehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04861390949106652253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1661527253670929640.post-9188625408010851332011-07-26T21:24:26.869-07:002011-07-26T21:24:26.869-07:00Erin and I met 8 years ago when I first moved to L...Erin and I met 8 years ago when I first moved to Los Angeles. We were cast in a production of Ernest in Love at The Fremont Centre Theatre in South Pasadena. I played Jack's manservant Perkins and Erin understudied Gwendolyn's maid. She went on for a few performances and was brilliant.
Our paths have crossed a few times over the years. Coincidentally, we were both in an indie film called Office of the Dead, but not in the same scenes. (rent it if you can find it!)
When Kate and I were writing this series, Erin was at the top of my list to play Peggy. I'm so glad she came on board. The Playhousehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04861390949106652253noreply@blogger.com
